Our Community
Blacksburg is located in the heart of the New River Valley between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Plateau. Ask anyone who grew up in this area, and they'll probably tell you it is almost perfect. The weather rarely sees the extremes of other parts of the country, and the mountains that form our "skyline" are beautiful all year round, whether they are green and lush or covered in snow.

The people of the New River Valley are a diverse collection of individuals and families from all over the world, many of whom have come here because of Virginia Tech and Radford University. There is a strong arts community and plenty of outdoor recreation to be had. The Appalachian Trail lies just to our west and the Blue Ridge Parkway to our east. People raft and canoe on the New River, not to mention fish. Mountain Lake and Claytor Lake are other popular destinations.

Another major obsession in the NRV are the Hokies. It won't take long before you ask, "What is a Hokie?" The Hokie Bird is the mascot of Virginia Tech -- and he seems to be everywhere! Whether it is football, basketball, soccer, baseball or any of the other team sports at VT, there are plenty of screaming fans to go around.

The region is growing and developing, with new retail venues opening all over the valley. Thankfully, due to careful planning and advocacy, local residents are striving to maintain the natural beauty around us while allowing for measured growth.

All of the distinctive things that make the New River Valley what it is also have lead so many to call it home. Come see what we mean!
